Grade 5 Science:
is working on an independent study about renewable energy resources.  They have looked at a number of them during class time and are now doing some more in-depth research to become the expert on one of their choosing.  Please find the learning goals, success criteria and rubric for this activity on the blog.  Your student should be able to put together a great project in a couple of hours.  If they wish to spend a great deal of time, that is their choice but a level 4 is obtainable without spending a copious amount of time.  If you wish to submit things electronically or ask a question, my email address is bkemsley@scdsb.on.ca.

Grade 5 Science – Conservation of Energy
Renewable Energy Resources

You are to select one renewable energy source that you are interested in and become the expert on it.  When typing out your information be sure to organize it so that it is easy to read and all items are answered in depth.  Please record the source of your information.  To be highly successful you need to address each of the success criteria and use it as a checklist.  A rubric is included to guide you as well.

Project Learning Goal
To be able to identify renewable and non-renewable sources of energy and use research skills to investigate a particular renewable source.

Success Criteria:

  • I have identified the renewable source (ex. wind)
  • I have explained how the energy source works (ex. Wind turns turbines that create electrical energy)
  • I have described who, if anyone, is using this source currently (ex. Many people in California)
  • I have explained why I feel people should start using this source (ex. Cost savings and it is better for the environment)
  • I have stated the advantages and disadvantages of this source (ex. Doesn’t harm the environment but can only be used in windy areas)
  • I have included a picture or diagram of the technology used with this source (ex. Picture of a windmill)
  • I have included some additional interesting and relevant information on my topic
  • I have checked my spelling and grammar carefully
  • I have presented my information in a logical and easy to follow format
